Gary Griggs is long-time director of the Institute of Marine Sciences and professor of earth and planetary sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. A geologist, he has been studying the 1,100-mile-long coast of California for 45 years and is the author of several books dealing with the coast, in particular with coastal hazards. In "Introduction to California's Beaches and Coast," part of the California Natural History Guides, Professor Griggs writes lightly and personally about the California coast in a way that is accessible to residents and visitors to the coast. The book is authoritative and will be of great value as well to professionals. It covers the formation of the coast, its evolution, sand sources, shoreline position change, and fossil hunting on the beach among many topics. The book is enhanced by 211 color photographs, both close-ups by Professor Griggs and colleagues, and notably by aerial views from the Kenneth and Gabriella Adelman, California Coastal Records Project . The paperback, which I reviewed, is conveniently sized (11.5 x 18 cm) and of high-quality glossy paper. It can withstand many visits to the beach.
