Dr. Nicholas C. Kraus passed away on 3 February 2011, after a long battle with lung cancer (despite never having been a smoker). He began his coastal engineering career at the Nearshore Environment Research Center, Tokyo, Japan, in 1976, after obtaining his Ph.D. in physics and training in martial arts. During his career, Nick had 415 different publications in book chapters, journal articles, conference proceedings, and technical reports. However, perhaps Nick's greatest legacy will be the mentoring and encouragement he gave to those of us who were his colleagues and students. Below is a reprint of a 2009 interview with Nick in recognition of his receiving the O'Brien Award. I close this introduction with some quotes from Nick's colleagues as they honored his retirement from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CH L), in December 2010. — Julie Dean Rosati, February 2011
