As I think about my first editorial for Shore & Beach, I am distracted and distressed by the events that are continuing to unfold after the Tohoku Magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami. My first and, so far, only experience with a large earthquake was the Magnitude 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake that struck north-central California in 1989; the shaking lasted only about 15 seconds but it seemed to me like several minutes. The Tohoku earthquake was many times the magnitude of the Loma Prieta event and it lasted for about 5 minutes. The destruction to northern Japan, and more specifically to coastal areas, is beyond imagination. I am certain that I speak for all ASBPA members in extending our condolences and support to the people of Japan. Many of the ports and harbors in California were damaged by the tsunami, and I have been talking with a lot of people along the California coast about their experiences during the event. Many people knew a lot about tsunamis, but others had misconceptions. There continues to be an important place for journals such as Shore & Beach that have a mission to publish technically sound articles that can be understood by interested readers with a broad range of backgrounds.
