After grad school at the University of Texas-Austin, in 1978, I returned to Florida to look for a job related to beaches, with which 1 became fascinated in the 1960s when my father was stationed at Patrick Air Force Base in Brevard County, Florida. After knocking on a few doors, I quickly found my way to Ralph Clark's office at the Florida Bureau of Beaches and Shores. Ralph graciously guided me to Florida consulting firms actively engaged in beach work; I found a good job and have since lived in Florida. Over the past 33 years, I have occasionally interacted professionally with Ralph, who I've always found to calmly, patiently, and graciously share his knowledge about the coastal environment we passionately share — as he eloquently does below. ■ What is your background in coastal engineering? For the past 37+ years, I've been very blessed to have been part of Florida's beach preservation program. I started my undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University and completed graduate studies in coastal engineering at the University of Florida. In 1973, I was hired by the state of Florida as a coastal engineer on a small staff of what was then called the Florida Bureau of Beaches and Shores. I continued working for the state in several different positions, including eight years as a bureau chief, and contributed to the various beach program elements, including beach management, coastal construction regulation, coastal building codes, beach restoration, inlet management, beach and inlet monitoring, post-storm response and hurricane impact assessments.
