摘要

The team that put together this extraordinary review of Hawaiian ecological and community history has juxtaposed law and science, genealogy and geology, movement and stasis of the peoples of Hawaii to offer an amazing treatise on the creation and evolution of what we all cannot help but call "paradise." As we contend with the forces of nature and human activity in fighting against time to save our earth, we remain in awe of an eco-system, totally self-sustaining and essentially perfect, which has been loved in the words of Shakespeare's Othello, "not wisely but too well" by the human creatures that found and settled on its shores. "Living on the Shores of Hawai'i" moves quickly from its description of the almost unbearable beauty and drama that informs these islands to the sequence of anthropogenic problems created by shortsiahted destruction of sand dunes and subsequent loss of sand and shore to the remedies of sea walls and dams which led only to further losses on Hawaii's beloved coast.
