摘要

This issue of Shore & Beach is focused on "coastal structures" -particularly the effects of groins and breakwaters upon sediment processes and adjacent shorelines. The history of coastal structures commonly reflects their adverse effects upon downdrift beaches. However, many local governments - in Florida, North Carolina, California, and elsewhere - have recently proposed structures contending no downdrift effects will occur. Articles in this issue illustrate circumstances where downdrift impacts have occurred and other circumstances where downdrift impacts have not occurred.
