Field investigation of Hurricane Ike impacts to the upper Texas coast

Hurricane Ike struck the Texas coast near Galveston on 13 September 2008. Under the auspices of the Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute (COPRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a team of 14 coastal scientists and engineers inspected the upper Texas coast within three weeks of landfall. The COPRI team surveyed, examined, documented, and reported on the effects of Hurricane Ike on coastal landforms, structures, marinas, shore protection systems, and other infrastructure. The team focused on coastal areas in the vicinity of Galveston. Piers, marinas, coastal infrastructure, and buildings showed damage ranging from minor to complete destruction, depending on location and elevation. Bolivar Peninsula, to the right of the hurricane path, experienced severe damage, and three communities were almost completely destroyed. There was also significant flood and wave damage to areas such as Galveston Island and Brazoria County that were on the left side of the hurricane track. Beach erosion and prominent overwash fans were observed throughout parts of the study area. One conclusion from field inspections was that elevation was a key determinant for building survival. Elevation was also a major factor for stability and effectiveness of shore protection. With some exceptions, much of the public infrastructure was in usable condition following the hurricane.
