摘要

Marakia tourist village lies on the western coast of Egypt overlooking the Mediterranean. Its beach is situated in an open active area exposed to the combined action of waves and currents. The near shore and beach face slopes are very steep. Existence of rip currents along Marakia Beach is causing serious hazards to the swimmers. This paper presents the main findings of a short period of field studies carried out in the nearshore zone and gives a brief description of recommended control measures to create a safe zone for recreational water activities with minimum effects on the coastal environment. The suggested control measures include the construction of submerged breakwater parallel to the shoreline with two transverse barriers perpendicular to the coastline at both ends, and creation of a gently sloping (50:1) beach inside the zone bounded by the submerged breakwater and the two barriers. Sand accumulated by wind in the back shore would be used to build this beach. A recent study carried out by Delft Hydraulic Laboratory (DHL) has recommended in principle this solution.
