San Francisco is a city that has reinvented itself many times, and its western boundary at Ocean Beach has been part of these transformations, adapting from the early Gold Rush days to the recent "dot.com" phenomenon. Now, at the beginning of the 21st century, massive engineering projects are giving way to restoration efforts. Projects that adjust to natural forces are replacing attempts to control nature. Coastal areas are recognized for their inherent beauty and natural processes used to guide their management. This new philosophy is being put to the test now at Ocean Beach, where erosion is threatening the southern section of The Great Highway. The latest transformation of Ocean Beach is occurring right now.
