Nano technology is the fastest-growing area of physics. Regarded by experts as the key technology of the 21st century, it is expected to lead to the merging of the natural sciences physics, chemistry, biology and medicine, since all effects will eventually be dependent on nanometer dimensions. Looking at the future of electronics, the question thus arises as to what extent existing transistors can be further reduced in size, and whether promising new types of devices based on quantum effects will make it possible to achieve a reduction in size down to that of a few atoms.
