Students typically receive a syllabus at an early meeting of a course. Sometimes, schools provide faculty with guidelines or a template for the content of these handouts, but more often syllabi may display considerable variation in both the topics covered and the level of detail given. This article presents my perspectives on the purposes of a syllabus and its content. Other documents, of course, might cover some of this content. Traditionally, such syllabi were distributed in paper form, although distribution now may include e-mail or course web pages.
