Saturday, 1 February 2003, the news reports the space shuttle disaster. One report mentioned the possibility of a computer software error since the entry of the shuttle is computer controlled. As you read the December 2002 issue of inroads, you will notice four independent articles that directly address mathematics in computer science - this includes Math CountS. Here is a brief summary of the other three articles. 1. "Where is Programming Methodology These Days?" by David Gries is a tribute to Edsger W. Dijkstra reiterating his important lessons regarding mathematics, logic and rigor in computer science. It asks why these seminal lessons have not been adopted in the education of our students? 2. "Why Computer Science Students Need Math" by Theresa Beaufouef argues that "Mathematics is fundamental to the study of computer science." The intrinsic coupling between mathematics, problem solving, programming, computer systems, theory, and systems analysis is made and emphasized. Typically, students with an affinity for mathematics, an interest in computers and a desire to learn are successful in their computer science studies. 3. "Enhancing the Quality of Learning and Understanding of First-Year Mathematics for Computer Science Related Majors" by Francis Suraweera presents techniques for motivating foundational concepts when teaching discrete mathematics and logic to first year computing students.
