Digital audio processing-and digital processing of speech signals in particular-gained increasing importance during the last 10-15 years. The main driver that forced this development was the enormous progress in communication technology, especially mobile phone development and the expansion of the Internet. Thus, not only the classically addressed problem of high-quality signal transmission but also the enhancement of the signal quality at both the sending and receiving sides became important. This is especially true for communication in acoustically adverse environments, such as moving cars. Here, the task is especially challenging since, for safety reasons, in many countries only hands-free communication is allowed. Thus, as well as background noise, echoes are also disturbing signal components.
