Your phone, your watch, your car, your refrigerator, your home thermostat—all may be part of your personal network of smart, connected objects taking shape as the Internet of Things, or IoT. The IoT, a term reportedly coined by Peter T. Lewis at a 1985 Federal Communications Commission-supported conference, is the latest incarnation of information age innovation. It offers the promise of total connectivity between humans and their so-called electronic servants.
