At times, warfighting and networking seem to have been in a race to see which can become more complex faster. Asymmetrical warfare has changed the battlespace, and the information revolution has extended its tendrils deep into the force to promise advanced capabilities to the individual warfighter. New technologies and capabilities are being designed in defense laboratories, and the private sector is introducing new systems that are being adapted for battlefield use. Soldiers are introducing familiar technologies into unfamiliar settings-and making them work. Data collection continues to grow by leaps and bounds, and analytical systems are processing that data into knowledge so it can be exploited efficiently by individuals.
