The AFCEA Educational Foundation provides more than 150 awards for academic excellence annually at more than 30 educational institutions and training commands of the uniformed services. These traditional AFCEA awards recognize achievement in subjects or courses related to command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C~4ISR). One of the highest honors AFCEA bestows each year is the Distinguished Commissioning Honor Award, presented annually at the five service academies: the U.S. Air Force, Military, Naval, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine academies. The program was established in the late 1940s to recognize the top graduate from the Department of Electrical Engineering at each academy. A comparable award was established in 1991 for graduating ROTC students in each service.
