Open Source Information—Aiming to make better use of open-source information in the war on terrorism, the U.S. Defense Department is bringing together the skills and technologies of Factiva and Saffron Technology (www.saffron tech.com). Factiva (www.factiva.com) is a provider of open-source news and information, and Saffron Technology is a leader in the development of real-time associative memory systems. The three-year research and development contract involves applying Saffron's discovery tool, SaffronWeb, to Factiva's database of global business news and information. The objective is to help intelligence analysts see valuable connections between pieces of apparently unrelated, open-source information by applying link-analysis technology. SaffronWeb provides the ability to sift through data and make inferences from the data connections that it creates and stores. In addition, analysts can access their colleagues' user models to collaborate on queries and to leverage the discoveries of others. Saffron Technology is based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, and Factiva, a Dow Jones and Reuters company, is headquartered in New York.
