Back when employment often involved steam engines and mechanised looms, it was all the rage to compare everything to a machine. During the twentieth century this fell out of favour, but that trend ignored the work of Alan Turing who, during the 1930s, redefined what was meant by computation and laid the theoretical basis for the digital age. Leslie Valiant's meticulous volume applies Turing's ideas to cognitive learning and evolution, and in so doing the author moves beyond what was an analogy in the nineteenth century towards something much deeper.
