Energy efficiency has been referred to as "the third fuel" and, in the case of the electrical power sector, as a virtual power station. If societies can produce and use energy more efficiently then they reduce the need for investment in energy infrastructure, save primary energy resources, and reduce the negative consequences of excessive energy use, such as greenhouse gas emissions.
