First impression can be a risky and potentially embarrassing proposition, not least for this reviewer. No fan of coffee table books, I was naturally apprehensive when confronted with my copy of this book, whose atypical design and glossy patina fostered the perception of triviality masquerading as scholarship. Such an impression, I am delighted to report, is wholly unwarranted. In place of the one-dimensional exercises in self-congratulation and affirmation with which coffee table books are typically associated is an excellent collection of balanced analyses that proffer hard yet fair assessments of APEC's purposes, problems and prospects as the trade forum commemorated its twentieth year in 2009.
