Cet article vise à introduire ce numéro spécial consacré à la Conférence inaugurale sur le commerce et la gestion qui a eu lieu en 2015 à L'Ecole de commerce et de gestion de Mona. Il rassemble les principaux résultats, les arguments et les perspectives des communications qui se sont alignées au plus près du thème de la conférence. Ce faisant, l'article se concentre sur les défis rencontrés par l'accroissement de l'entreprenariat, des entreprises, de la croissance économique et de la compétitivité dans les Petits états insulaires en voie de développement (PEID) tels que ceux des Caraïbes, ainsi que les stratégies pour répondre à ces défis. Ces défis et stratégies sont mis en avant du point de vue des petites entreprises qui dominent le monde des affaires dans les PEID. Cette introduction suggère également quelques domaines pour la recherche et les orientations politiques à venir.%This article introduces the special issue to the Inaugural Conference on Business and Management hosted by the Mona School of Business and Management in 2015. It pulls together the main findings, arguments and perspectives of those papers that were most closely aligned with the theme of the conference. In so doing, it focuses on the challenges to increasing entrepreneurship, enterprise, competitiveness and growth in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), such as those in the Caribbean, and the strategies for addressing them. These challenges and strategies are advanced primarily from the point of view of small businesses that tend to dominate the business landscape of SIDS. Taken together these papers, support the view of much of the scholarly and practitioner community that insufficient attention has been paid to this group of businesses within the Caribbean and more generally in the SIDS context. Drawing from the papers, a number of challenges and solutions are highlighted, many of which point to the role of policy (including legal and regulatory), technology, business strategy and contextual learning. This introduction also suggests some areas for future research and policy directions.
