Periodically in the life of a writer and public intellectual, there emerges one signal work which encapsulates above all his existing productions, the purpose of his life's mission, and the cause for which he was born. In the case of CLR James, it was arguably Beyond A Boundary, for Walter Rodney it was How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, and with Eric Williams it was Capitalism and Slavery. The significance of such works resides in their timeliness in answering a particular intellectual need at the precise historical moment and in their ability to spark broader political movements which open doors that lead from one historical period to another.
