Maxine Garvey and Gordon Shirley tackle the very important question of how firms in small developing economies succeed in competing in the global economy where they encounter much larger corporate entities, including multinational corporations. In coping with international competition some of these local firms internationalize their business operations including, in some cases, becoming multinational corporations. The authors bring to bear on this exercise a combination of scholarship developed in academia and pragmatism honed by their managerial and policy experience in the Caribbean and in the United States. Their approach is evidence-based, derived from in-depth interviews with CEOS and executives of Caribbean firms. The resulting book is a valuable contribution to the emergent literature on how firms in small developing economies cope with international competition. They continue the work on this subject pioneered at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies by Alvin Wint and more recently by Densil Williams. These small economies are a distinctive genre of economy and small firms going international are different from other business environments.
