This paper's central theoretical and empirical thrust is to examine the processes of racial/ethnic group formation of early first-generation Afro-Caribbean~1 immigrants and African Americans in New York City in the early decades of the twentieth century. These processes, generally called "ethnogenesis", turn primarily on the dynamics of social identity boundary construction. Intersecting race with ethnicity, as I do mostly in this paper, is an attempt, first, to discern the saliency of race and ethnicity to the social identities of early first-generation Afro-Caribbean immigrants and African Americans, and second, to demonstrate the transitive nature of their social identification.%La esencia teórica y empírica de este trabajo es el análisis de los procesos de formación de grupos raciales/étnicos en las primeras generaciones de inmigrantes afrocaribeños y afro-americanos en la ciudad de Nueva York en las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Estos procesos, generalmente llamados "etnogénesis", se transforman principalmente en la dinámica de la construcción de los límites de la identidad social.
