This paper examines speech events, in the sense in which this term is used by Hymes (1974), referring to internally colierent bodies of discourse governed by rules widely known within a speech community. These rules govern what is said, by whom, when, how and with what intent. We present a study of tioo traditional Suriname speech events, referred to as lobisingi, literally 'love songs' and the ceremonial 'birthday party'. The participants are all female. Though some tunes treating heterosexual relationships, the lobisingi normally has as its theme jealousy in same-sex love affairs betwen women (Voorhoeve and Lichtveld 1975; Wekker 1997).%Cet article examine des événements de communication, dans le sens employé par Hymes (1974) pour se référer à des systèmes de paroles cohérents régis par des règles bien connues au sein d'une communauté de langage.
