There's a little joke that conservative commentator David Frum likes to tell: two communist comrades from the 1930s, it goes, run into each other after three decades. One has lost little of his ideological fire and, now a sixties "new lefty," fervently preaches about the need for proletarian solidarity and revolution. The other, however, remains visibly unmoved and eventually lets out a weary response: "my friend, your answers are so old that I've forgotten the question." David Scott, an anthropologist by training but polymath by inclination, is known neither for spinning comic anecdotes nor for supporting right wing causes. Still, readers of his latest work will quickly recognize that he does resemble his neo-con namesake in one important regard: like David Frum, David Scott is vitally interested in the relationship between the passage of time and the relevance of oppositional politics. This, in fact, is the overarching concern of Conscripts of Modernity: the tragedy of colonial Enlightenment. Notwithstanding its awesomely broad intellectual sources and engagements, the book is above all Scott's plea for his scholarly comrades to ponder deep and hard the moment in which they work, the questions that press them and the narratives they compose.
