摘要

The Islands of Globalization project encourages new island-centered ways of teaching and learning about globalization as well as innovative forms of cross-regional collaboration. The initiative emerged from a collaboration between two Honolulu-based programmes, the Pacific Islands Development Program at the East-West Center and the Center for Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawai'i, both of which were founded and grounded in a particular American area studies approach to international understanding and relations. These centers recognize that area studies historically has been heavily criticized for its essentialization of the "Other" and, as Edward Said pointed stated, "more particularly valuable as a sign of European-Atlantic power over the (Other) than it is a veridic discourse about the (Other)" (Said 1978: 6). The phenomenon of globalization - the seeming erosion of barriers between countries, regions, economies and cultures - has also increased the anxiety among area studies practitioners (and funders) about its relevance and utility.
