摘要

In this article I explore Japanese interest in Jamaican popular culture, particularly dancehall music. I investigate how Japanese authenticate their engagements with the music in part by redeploying Jamaican dancehall's expressive forms in the Japanese context. I focus on four kinds of symbolic resources involved in this process: staged embodiment; racial iconography; dub plates; and language. I argue nonetheless that to most fully appreciate dancehall in Japan it is important to value it not in strict relation to the Jamaican original, but on its own terms. Seen in this way, how Japanese appropriate dancehall permits important insight into the workings of Japanese society at large, with potential implications for the future of Jamaican-Japanese relationships.
