[...] as Michigan Senator Carl Levin ventured upon the unsealing a half century later of interviews with potential McCarthy witnesses who were never publicly interrogated, a resurgence of those terrible times seemed unlikely if not impossible. Yet by any measure the status of academic freedom and free inquiry has come a very long way from McCarthyism. [...] the phrase "canonical value" is at least plausible in the current climate.
