摘要

Our story takes place at "Epsilon" (not the company's real name), a highly successful vendor of telecom billing systems. Fresh from a dot-com CTO experience, my partner Fariba and I arrive as consultants. Our task? To evaluate Epsilon's software development team, analyze deficiencies in the legacy products and set goals for their replacement. In the 1974 film Bank Shot, George C. Scott's character developed an innovative approach to crime: He didn't rob the bank, he stole it—he stole the entire bank! At Epsilon, that movie was constantly on our minds. The other managers cased our group, seeking to steal our team members for their short-staffed projects. Our project was R&D and didn't have a specific customer—or a direct revenue stream. Despite this precarious position, however, we always seemed to find win-win solutions.
