The authors have presented very interesting experimental work on static undrained resistance of sandy soil with low fines content. Such studies provide "back-bone" information for understanding certain form of cyclic liquefaction triggered by cyclic loading [1,17] say in earthquake situations. They systematically varied sand grading properties and fines content, f_c, to investigate the applicability of two alternative measures of "effective" void ratio: (ⅰ) e_c and (ⅱ) e_c,e_q. It is a pity that pore water pressure response during undrained shearing, which allowed a more in-depth interpretation of the test results, has not been presented.
