The authors have carried out a mathematical analysis of the effect of the petrographic composition, degree of reduction and stage of metamorphism of coals of the Kuznetsk basin on dust formation and the lower limit of dust explosiveness. The yield of dust (particle diameter ≤ 70 μm), as estimated according to the Rosin-Rammler equation, upon treatment of data on the particle-size distribution (granulometric composition) decreases with increasing content of inertinite in coal and depends on the type of fracturing (endogenous or exogenous). The grindability of vitrinite in the range of the reflectance index R_(o,r) = 0.7-1.9% exceeds the grindability of inertinite. As the inertinite content of coal and the degree of metamorphism increase the yield of dust decreases during the mining of seams of differently reduced coals and the dust explosiveness decreases due to an increase in the lower limit of explosiveness.
