Based on the analysis of the relationship of the structural and chemical indices of organic compounds containing C, H, N, O and S atoms, a new structural parameter δ is proposed, which characterizes their degree of nonsaturation. The quantity δ is determined from the data on the elemental composition of compounds and assumes the values from -12.5 (for methane) to 16.67 (for graphite). For vitrinite coals, a good linear relationship was found between δ and the reflectance index in air R_a. The authors carried out an analysis of the classification characteristics of fossil fuels (coals, peats, shales and crude oils) in the coordinates of δ and Ω, where Ω is the structural index (for example, the atomic H/C ratios, the total number of atoms in unit mass n_(at) per number of carbon atoms, n_(at)_C, etc.).
