The authors have studied the effect of activation conditions on the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H_2 and the physico-chemical properties of a 20% Co/SiO_2 catalyst. The samples were activated by direct reduction with hydrogen, reduction-oxidation and a reduction-oxidation-reduction cycle. The best results were obtained by using a single-stage reduction and cyclic treatment. With the degree of conversion equal to about 70% the yield of liquid hydrocarbons was about 120 g/cm~3 (58% of theory) and the selectivity with respect to their formation reached 78%. The method of chemisorption of oxygen was used to determine the surface, the degree of reduction and dispersity of metallic cobalt.
