Based on the data for principal maceral groups (vitrinite, inertinite, liptinite) and coals of various basins, the authors have established a general relationship between the structural-chemical parameter δ, which characterizes. the degree of saturation of organic matter, and the volatile-matter yield. For vitrinite coals the value of δ determined from the data on the elemental composition correlates with the reflectance index in an air medium R_a and oil immersion R_o and may be used as the structural-chemical index of the degree of metamorphism.
