New trends are considered in the estimation of the quality of blast-furnace coke, which are based on the determination of the high-temperature reactivity of lump material and its strength after reaction. With optimal values of these properties there are provided a planned conduction of blast-furnace smelting and the possibility of lowering the specific consumption of coke for producing pig iron. The formation of the optimal quality of coke with new indices is achieved by the choice of the grade composition of coal blends and by optimization of coking conditions. The methods of solution of the coke quality problem are analyzed with the use of industrial data and the results of industrial experiments carried out in the byproduct coke and blast-furnace sections of the Cherepovetsk metallurgical plant.
