The methods of elemental, functional, structural-group analysis, IR, UV, and H-NMR spectroscopies, capillary gas chromatography, and cryoscopy were used To study in detail the chemical composition of phenols in the tars of low-temperature Carbonization of Moscow Basin brown coals. We found that the phenols are an Involved mixture of high-molecular compounds that in addition to the phenol groups Contain alcohol, ketone, and alkoxyl groups, quinoid rings, oxygen in the composition Of the heterocycles, therefore they can be called phenols only conditionally. We Also found that the degree of liquefaction of the organic matter of the coals Correlates positively with the content in the low-temperature carbonization tar of di- and triatomic phenols, their ethers, indanols, cresols, and xylenols.
