The influence of the oxidizing modification of coal with gaseous nitric acid (140 deg C) and acetyl nitrate (20 deg C) on the properties of adsorbents produced by activation with steam (700-850 deg C) or potassium hydroxide in an argon atmosphere (500-850 deg C) was investigated. In line with the results of EPR and IR spectroscopy, the oxidizing modification reforms the structure of the coal as a result of reactions of nitration, electrophilic substitution, and partial oxydestruction with the formation of oxygen functional groups and the incorporation of anions (NO~-_3 and AcO~-) into the coal skeleton. The modified coals are more reactive with respect to H_2O or KOH and form adsorbents (700-1000 m~2g~-1) under milder activation conditions. Methods of the selective action on the oxygen functional groups (decarboxylation, O-methylation, treatment with HCl or Ca(OH)_2, reduction with LiAlH_4) were used To determine the influence of various types of the groups on the nature of Development of the surface, the yield and adsorptivity of the activated carbons.
