This special issue of Solid-State Electronics is dedicated to topics discussed during the 42th European Solid-State Device Research Conference (ESSDERC) held in Bordeaux, France in September 2012. The issue contains 29 papers prepared by renowned researchers from industry and academia, specially selected from a large number of ESSDERC'12 manuscripts. The main topics of ESSDERC'12 comprised the following research areas: 1. Advanced CMOS Devices 2. Process & Integration 3. Power, High Frequency, and optoelectronics semiconductor devices 4. Modeling and Simulation 5. Characterization, Reliability and Yield 6. Memories 7. MEMS, Displays and SoC 8. Emerging non-CMOS devices and technologies.
