摘要

Every reader of this publication has an innate love of periodicity, this writer being no exception. At some point, each of us became enamored of the subtle physical mechanisms that cause natural repetition of pressure patterns and oscillating stress distributions; we became attracted to the study of sound and vibration. I enjoyed being a student, perhaps to the extent that I have never ceased being one. Of all the various physical phenomena I have studied, none has captured my curiosity with the same intensity and long lasting grasp as the concept of resonance. There is an inexplicable air of mystery surrounding this mechanism and it remains a joy of exploration after three decades in its pursuit. Perhaps my sensitivity to this mechanism makes me more acutely aware of other periodic events in the flow of my life.
