Modal analysis, combined with boundary element radiation calculations in a simple vibration-radiation (V-R) model, can offer new insights into the mechanical and acoustical properties of the violin (and other acoustic instruments). The V-R model can be used to simulate an acoustic response curve for the violin with soundpost which shows that only about one-fifth of the violin's mechanical modes below 1 kHz are strong radiators, in good agreement with many previous measurements. The V-R model applied to the same violin with the soundpost removed successfully simulates both the observed overall changes in acoustic response and the substantial changes observed in the acoustic response of the 1st corpus bending modes (major radiators in the violin with soundpost).
