It has been nearly 140 years since Wyley (1857), the Geological-Surveyor of the Cape Colony, reported to the Cape Parliament on the cupriferous rocks which 'protrude through' the gneissic country rocks in the vicinity of the towns of Spring-bokfontein and O'okiep, thus introducing some scientific levity into the widely speculative debate about the Koperberge of Namaqualand that had commenced two centuries earlier with the arrival of the first European settlers on the subcontinent. In the intervening years, the deposits have yielded in excess of 2 Mt of copper (Lombaard et al, 1986), making them the second-largest source of the metal in southern Africa. Their significance, however, extends beyond their mineral potential. As the Geological Society of South Africa reflects on a century of geological endeavour in the subcontinent, it is pertinent to note that the Okiep Copper District can rightly be regarded as the birthplace of the South African mining industry.
