The Sani Pass, on Lesotho's eastern border with South Africa, provides access to an approximately 800 m-thick section through Jurassic basalt lavas of the Karoo Central Province. Field mapping and geochemical characterization have allowed the subdivision of the basalts into a series of four compositionally distinct stratigraphic units in the lowermost 175 m of the sequence, overlain by a thick (approximately 625 m) succession of basalts that correlate with the Lesotho basalt type, which occurs over wide areas of the Karoo Central Province. The lowermost lava units are intercalated with isolated thin bands of pyroclastic material.
