Twenty types of diagenetic textures, belonging to eight major textural groups, are identified in the Neogene Uloa Formation of Zululand. Four different diagenetic environments and five diagenetic stages have been distinguished. The sequence of diagenetic events suggests a progressive change from marine-phreatic to meteoric-phreatic, meteoric vadose, and finally shallow-burial diagenesis, confirming the essentially regressive character of the succession brought about by falling sea levels in the late Neogene Period. The prevailing climate during the diagenesis of the Uloa Formation was probably warm and humid.
