Underthrusting in the Kloof Gold Mine

Several mechanisms of Underthrusting associated with a thrust system on the Kloof Gold Mine are discussed and are compared with structures associated with an underthrust in the Kareebome Thrust (Cape Fold Belt). Where a competent layer, which is shortened by thrust faulting, is overlain by an equally competent lithology but underlain by incompetent material, downward ramps may be formed by Underthrusting. The synforms which develop beneath these ramps can be compared with the antiforms associated with frontal ramps. Although some of the space problem created by Underthrusting may be accommodated by cleavage formation and ductile flow, ultimately the downward ramp will lock. Following this, further shortening may be achieved by overthrusting, which may either reactivate the downward ramp or, alternatively, a new over-thrust may form in the foreland of the downward ramp. Another possibility is that overthrusting and Underthrusting occur simultaneously.
