A survey of joints in greywackes of the Malmesbury Group, Tygerberg Formation was carried out in connection with redevelopment of the old oil storage quarry site, Cape Town Harbour. Five distinct sets of joints were identified by differences in characteristics and orientations; Jp parallel to the steeply dipping bedding/cleavage, Jh sub-horizontal stress relief joints, J2 extensional vertical cross joints, and J1 and J3 oblique shear joints. J1 and J3 are developed locally in proximity to strike-slip and thrust faults and vary at different localities. Comparison with joints in other Tygerberg Formation lithologies, at Bloubergstrand and other published studies, suggests that Jp, Jh, and J2 type joint sets are ubiquitous in the Malmesbury Group throughout the Cape Peninsula area. Jp joints are generally planar with 6-15 m continuity, whereas the J2 cross joints have low continuity and stepped surfaces. Jh 'sheeted' joints are irregular with wider openings. A seepage of water and oil was investigated and average opening widths, spacing, and proportions of oil stained joints for each set were used to estimate average void volumes and the total volume of oil contamination remaining in the rock mass.
