New U-Pb isotopic data for zircon, Sm-Nd whole rock isotopic data, and REE whole-rock data indicate that the anorogenic Entabeni pluton of two-mica, alkali granite was emplaced 1957 ± 3 Ma ago and derived from tonalitic to trondbjemitic rocks. These rocks in turn were derived from a mafic source with an age of about 2810 Ma. The tonalitic and trondhjemitic rocks probably were not the Baviaanskloof Gneiss. The anorogenic emplacement of the Entabeni pluton conflicts tectoni-cally with the high-grade metamorphism and tectonism in the Central Zone of the Limpopo Belt between 2200 Ma and 1900 Ma ago and hence, apparently occurred before the Central Zone assumed its present position relative to the Southern Marginal Zone.
