摘要

The Limpopo granulite belt resulted from the collision of the Kaapvaal and Zimbabwe Cratons during the Limpopo orogeny (2700 - 2650 Ma). As a result, the Southern Marginal Zone (SMZ) of the Limpopo Belt was juxtaposed against the Sutherland Greenstone Belt of the Kaapvaal Craton along the Hout River Shear Zone. The gold deposits situated in the SMZ and the immediately adjacent Sutherland Greenstone Belt are all closely associated with the ductile Hout River Shear Zone system. The Franke gold deposit, which is situated close to the contact between the SMZ and the Sutherland Belt, is located in banded iron formation and mafic-ultramafic lithologies displaying amphibolite facies metamorphism. Two generations of ductile shearing, SZ1 and SZ2, are developed in the mine area. The ore-bodies are all located along the early ductile shear zones (SZ1) which are 50 - 150 cm wide, several hundreds of metres long, and are characterized by two types of S-C mylonites. Late ductile shear zones (SZ2) displace the ore bodies. Gold mineralization, closely associated with sulphides, occurred during the late stage of the SZ1 deformation and is therefore controlled by the first generation of ductile shearing.
