摘要

Daki??m??rti is a ??aivite iconographical form which appears in Indian art from the later Pallava period onwards. It was a stereotyped installation on the southern devakoha in any ??iva temple from the early C??a period. Deviating from this established pattern, some of the Viu temples, called Navatiruppatis, on both banks of the River T??miraparai in the Far South of India have these images installed on the devakohas, gr??vakohas, and talas of the vim??nas in Viu temples. Why a typical ??aiva iconographical motif posed like Viu-Yog????vara appears in Viu temples is the question answered in this article. It is suggested that these might be representations of Viu posing as Dakia, a point clearly indicated in several of the epithets in the Viusahasran??ma.
