The satellite communications programme in India has evolved over a period of thirty years. Started with the idea of using satellite communications for developmental edu- cation, the programme is now in full bloom touching a wide range of daily life of most of the people of India in business, entertainment, information technology, education, government and telecommunications. This paper traces the evolution and progress of the INSAT Programme and also describes the role of private sector in the satellite communications use and transforming it into an industry.
